Are you a citizen or of origin of Pakistan?
Overview
The e-Entry Visa is a specialized digital visa category launched in late 2025 to streamline the process for individuals with deep personal or familial ties to India. It serves as the electronic version of the traditional "Entry (X) Visa," moving what was once a complex consular process into a faster, online system.
Unlike the e-Tourist visa, which is for sightseeing, the e-Entry visa is specifically designed for Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), their family members, and the dependents of foreign professionals already living in India on long-term visas. It bridges the gap for those who need to stay in India for family reasons but do not yet hold an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.
Legal Framework and Recent Changes
The e-Entry visa was officially integrated into the Indian e-Visa framework on November 21, 2025. This change was part of a broader government initiative to digitize "Entry X" visas, which previously required physical appointments at VFS centers or embassies.
As of January 2026, the Indian government expanded the number of e-Visa compatible entry points to 51 gateways, including 31 major international airports and 5 seaports. While the system is now more accessible, the "4-Day Rule" remains strictly enforced: your application must be submitted at least four days before your intended arrival, or the portal will automatically block your request.
Rights as an e-Entry Visa Holder
Holding an e-Entry visa provides you with specific privileges tailored to family and long-term stay support, though it remains a temporary authorization.
- Multiple Entries: You are typically granted Multiple Entry privileges, allowing you to leave and re-enter India during the visa's validity period.
- Duration of Stay: The visa is generally valid for a continuous stay of up to 90 days from the date of your first entry.
- Family Reunification: You have the right to reside with your family members or principal visa-holding sponsors for the duration of the visa.
- Domestic Travel: You have full freedom of movement across India, except in "Protected" or "Restricted" areas (such as parts of Sikkim or the Andaman Islands), which require separate permits.
- Path to Status Change: While generally non-convertible, if you marry an Indian citizen while in the country, you may apply through the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) to convert your status to a long-term Entry Visa without leaving India.
- No Work Rights: You do not have the right to take up employment, engage in business activities, or enroll in long-term academic courses under this specific visa category.
