Eligibility Quiz
Are you a citizen of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein?
Overview
The Frontier Worker Permit is a specialized immigration status for citizens of the European Union (EU), Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein who live outside the UK but travel there for work. It was established under the UK’s post-Brexit withdrawal agreements to protect the rights of "cross-border" workers.
Unlike most UK work visas, this permit is only available to those who established their pattern of working in the UK while living abroad on or before December 31, 2020. It is not a route for new workers looking to start a career in the UK today; rather, it is a "grandfathered" right for those who have maintained this specific working arrangement since the transition period ended.
Important Limitations
It is critical to understand what this permit is not:
- No Path to Settlement: Time spent in the UK as a frontier worker does not count toward the five years required for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or British citizenship. Because you are legally "resident" abroad, you cannot settle in the UK via this route.
- No Dependents: You cannot add family members to your Frontier Worker Permit. If your family members wish to join you, they must qualify for their own status, such as an EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) Family Permit.
- Digital Status: The UK has transitioned to a "digital-first" system. Most users will not receive a physical card but will instead use the View and Prove service to show their rights to employers or at the border.
Rights as a Frontier Worker Permit Holder
Holding this permit grants you specific protections under the Withdrawal Agreement:
- Right to Work: You can work in both employed and self-employed capacities in the UK.
- Healthcare Access: You have access to the National Health Service (NHS) while in the UK for work. You are exempt from the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
- Ease of Travel: You can enter the UK using your digital status or permit without needing a separate visa for work purposes.
- Renewal Rights: Your permit is typically valid for 5 years (or 2 years if you have "retained" status). You can renew it indefinitely as long as you continue to meet the eligibility and residency criteria.
