Eligibility Quiz
Is the person you are joining (the sponsor) a Slovak citizen?
Overview
The Temporary Residence Permit for Family Reunification is the primary pathway for non-EU citizens (third-country nationals) to live in Slovakia with a family member who already holds a valid residence permit. This permit is designed to keep families together by granting dependents a legal status tied to their "sponsor"—the family member already residing in the Slovak Republic.
While this permit is the standard for most families, it is important to distinguish it from other statuses. If you are the spouse or dependent of a Slovak citizen, you typically apply for Permanent Residence for 5 years rather than this temporary permit. Additionally, since July 2024, new rules allow you to apply for a National Visa (Type D) specifically for family reunification, which can bridge the gap and allow you to enter Slovakia while your residence application is being processed.
Recent Legal Changes
The Slovak immigration system underwent significant modernization between 2024 and 2025.
- National Visa (Type D) Integration: Since July 2024, you can apply for a specific National Visa for family reunification. This is a major benefit, as it allows you to enter the country legally and stay there while the Foreign Police process your residence permit, rather than waiting months in your home country.
- Digital Platform: A new digital immigration platform began rolling out in July 2025. While many steps still require an in-person visit to the Foreign Police, the system is moving toward online application tracking and appointment booking to reduce the historical backlogs in major cities like Bratislava.
- Stricter Renewals: Amendments effective July 2025 have streamlined the renewal process for those already in the country but have increased the scrutiny of financial stability and the authenticity of the family unit.
Rights as a Temporary Residence Holder
Holding a Temporary Residence Permit for Family Reunification grants you several key rights within the Slovak Republic:
- Work Rights: You generally have immediate access to the labor market. You can be employed or start a business without needing a separate work permit, provided your sponsor’s residence type allows for family work authorization.
- Schengen Travel: You may travel freely within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without needing additional visas.
- Education: Minor children have full access to the Slovak public school system under the same conditions as Slovak citizens.
- Path to Permanent Residence: After 5 years of continuous legal residence in Slovakia, you become eligible to apply for long-term (permanent) residence.
- Validity: Your permit is typically issued for the same duration as your sponsor's permit, up to a maximum of 5 years per issuance.
