Eligibility Quiz
Are you a citizen of a country outside the EU, EEA, or Switzerland?
Requirements
To qualify for this visa, you must demonstrate that you are a "qualified professional." The Portuguese government uses specific criteria to determine who meets this threshold:
- Educational Qualifications: You must hold a higher education degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD) OR possess high-level professional certifications and significant experience in a specialized field, such as Information Technology, Engineering, or Healthcare.
- Financial Self-Sufficiency: You must prove you have enough money to support yourself during your search. The requirement is at least three times the Portuguese Guaranteed Minimum Monthly Remuneration (RMMG). For 2026, this is approximately €2,610 – €2,800.
- Exception: This financial requirement can be waived if a Portuguese citizen or legal resident signs a Term of Responsibility (Termo de Responsabilidade), legally guaranteeing your housing and living costs.
- IEFP Registration: Before you can even apply for the visa, you must register with the Institute for Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP). This registration acts as a formal declaration of your intent to enter the Portuguese labor market.
- Clean Legal Record: You must have no criminal convictions that would result in a ban from the Schengen Area.
Conditions & Warnings
Applicants must register with the IEFP portal and obtain a declaration before submitting their visa application to the consulate.
Significant administrative backlogs at AIMA may cause delays in converting the visa to a residence permit once in Portugal.
The 'Green Lane' fast-track processing is only available for specific shortage occupations as of 2026.

No formal language requirement for the initial visa, though Portuguese is often required for professional recognition in regulated fields.
