Application Process
The Skilled Work-Seeking Visa is a multi-stage process that begins in your home country and concludes in Portugal. You must first register with Portuguese employment authorities online before submitting a physical application at a consulate or visa center.
Phase 1: Pre-Application (Online)
- Register with IEFP: Before applying for the visa, you must register on the IEFP portal (Instituto do Emprego e Formação Profissional — Institute for Employment and Vocational Training). This expresses your interest in the Portuguese labor market.
- Obtain the Declaration: Once registered, download the IEFP Declaration. You cannot submit your visa application without this document.
Phase 2: The Visa Application (In Your Home Country)
- Book an Appointment: Schedule a "National Visa" appointment at the Portuguese Consulate or the designated VFS Global center serving your region.
- Prepare the Dossier: Gather all required documents, ensuring that non-Portuguese documents (except those in English, French, or Spanish) are translated and Apostilled (a form of international legalization).
- Submit and Provide Biometrics: Attend your appointment to submit your physical application and provide your fingerprints and a digital photo.
- Wait for Approval: The consulate will review your qualifications to ensure you meet the "highly qualified" criteria (degree or high-level certification).
Phase 3: Arrival and Job Search (In Portugal)
- Enter Portugal: Once your visa is stamped in your passport, you may enter Portugal. This visa is valid for 120 days.
- Note your AIMA Appointment: Your visa page will usually include a pre-scheduled date and time for an appointment with AIMA (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo — Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum). Do not miss this date.
- Secure Employment: You have 120 days to find a highly qualified job. If you need more time, you can apply for a one-time 60-day extension via the new online renewal portal if you can prove you are actively interviewing.
- Convert to Residency: Once you sign a work contract, attend your AIMA appointment to exchange your visa for a Residence Permit for Highly Qualified Activity.
