Eligibility Quiz
Were you a Nigerian citizen by birth?
Application Process
The Nigerian by Birth who Renounced Nigerian Citizenship Visa (Class N2A) is a permanent residence pathway. You can initiate this process from abroad at a Nigerian Mission or within Nigeria if you are changing your current immigration status.
Step 1: Gather Your Evidence
Before starting the online portal, ensure you have digital copies of the following:
- Formal Application Letter: A signed letter addressed to the Comptroller General of Immigration requesting the N2A visa.
- Renunciation Certificate: The official document proving you formally renounced your Nigerian citizenship under Section 29 of the Constitution.
- Proof of Birth: Your original Nigerian birth certificate or an attested document proving you were a Nigerian citizen by birth.
- Security Clearance: A police report or security clearance from your current country of residence.
- Passport: Your current foreign passport with at least 6 months of validity.
Step 2: Online Application and Payment
- Visit the Nigeria Immigration Service Portal.
- Select the Permanent Residence category and choose the N2A visa class.
- Fill out the application form accurately.
- Pay the required visa fees online using the portal's payment system.
- Important: Print your Payment Receipt and Acknowledgment Slip. You will not be seen at an office without these.
Step 3: Submission and Biometrics
Depending on your location, you must submit your physical file:
- If Abroad: Book an appointment at the nearest Nigerian Embassy or Consulate. You will submit your documents and provide biometric data (fingerprints and photo).
- If in Nigeria: Visit the Immigration Command headquarters to submit your application for a change of status.
Step 4: Interview and Approval
You may be required to attend an interview with immigration officers to verify your "by birth" status and the authenticity of your renunciation. Once approved, the visa is issued. This status grants you the right to live and work in Nigeria permanently without needing a separate CERPAC (Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Allied Card — the standard work permit for foreigners).
Fees
Fees for the N2A visa are based on reciprocity, meaning the cost depends on which country's passport you currently hold.
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Visa Fee | Varies by nationality (Check the Reciprocity Table) |
| Administrative/Service Charge | $20 – $100 (Varies by Mission) |
| Renunciation Fee (if not yet completed) | ₦250,000 |
Total Estimate: Costs vary significantly by nationality. For example, US and UK passport holders should expect to pay higher reciprocity fees than other nationals.
Note: This total does not include costs for obtaining police clearances, attesting birth certificates at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or travel expenses for biometric appointments.
Processing Time
The timeline for the N2A visa depends on the speed of security clearances and the specific Mission's workload.
- Online Application & Payment: Immediate.
- Security Clearance: 2–6 weeks (dependent on your current country's police authorities).
- Visa Processing & Biometrics: 7–15 business days after the interview and document submission.
- Document Validity: Your foreign passport must be valid for at least 6 months at the time of application. Your police clearance is typically considered valid for 3 to 6 months from the date of issuance.
Note: If you are applying for a spouse under the N2B category simultaneously, ensure both applications are linked to avoid separate processing delays.
