Eligibility Quiz
Are you currently outside of Mexico?
Overview
The Mexican Temporary Resident Visa (Residente Temporal) is the primary pathway for foreign nationals who wish to live in Mexico for more than six months but less than four years. It is designed for retirees, remote workers, investors, and families who have the financial means to support themselves without seeking local employment.
Unlike a tourist permit, this visa grants you a formal legal status and a residency card. It is a "stepping stone" status: it is initially granted for one year, can be renewed for an additional three years, and after a total of four years, it provides a direct path to permanent residency.
Rights as a Temporary Resident
Holding a Residente Temporal card grants you a specific set of protections and privileges within Mexico:
- Unlimited Travel: You may enter and exit Mexico as many times as you wish while your card is valid.
- Banking and Contracts: You have the right to open local Mexican bank accounts, sign long-term lease agreements, and register vehicles in your name.
- Remote Work Rights: You are legally permitted to work for companies located outside of Mexico and receive payment in foreign accounts.
- Local Work Restrictions: You do not have an automatic right to work for a Mexican employer. To take a local job, you must apply for a separate "Work Authorization" (Permiso para trabajar) from the immigration office.
- Path to Permanent Residency: After holding Temporary Resident status for four consecutive years, you have the right to convert to Permanent Residency. This conversion typically does not require you to prove your finances again.
- Family Reunification: You have the right to sponsor immediate family members (spouse and children) for their own residency visas.
