Eligibility Quiz
Are you currently outside of Mexico?
Application Process
The Mexican Temporary Resident Visa (Residente Temporal) is a two-stage process known as the Canje (exchange). You must begin the process at a Mexican consulate outside of Mexico and complete it at an immigration office once you arrive in the country.
Stage 1: The Consular Interview (Outside Mexico)
- Book an Appointment: Create an account and schedule your interview through the official MiConsulado booking portal. Appointments can be scarce; they often open in batches on the last Friday of each month.
- Prepare Your Paperwork: Complete the Visa Application Form (printed double-sided on a single sheet). Gather your original bank statements or pay stubs from the last 6 to 12 months. Many consulates require these to be "wet-signed" (physically signed or stamped by a bank official).
- Attend the Interview: Bring your passport, photo, and financial proof to the consulate. You will undergo a brief interview to verify your "Economic Solvency" or family ties.
- Receive Your Visa: If approved, a visa sticker will be placed in your passport. This sticker is valid for 180 days and allows for a single entry into Mexico.
Stage 2: The Canje (Inside Mexico)
- Enter Mexico Correctly: When you arrive at the border or airport, you must present your visa sticker to the immigration officer. Ensure they process you as a Resident and not a tourist. If you are marked as a tourist, your visa may be voided.
- Visit the INM Office: Within 30 days of your arrival, you must visit the local Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM—National Institute of Migration) office.
- Submit the Exchange Request: Provide your passport, the entry form provided at the border, and pay the residency card fees.
- Fingerprinting and Final Issuance: You will be called back for fingerprints and signatures. Once processed, you will receive your physical residency card, which is initially valid for one year.
Fees
Fees are paid in two phases: first to the Consulate in your local currency, and then to the INM in Mexican Pesos (MXN) once you are in Mexico.
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Consular Processing Fee | Approx. $53 USD |
| Residency Card (1 Year) | $11,140 MXN (approx. $650 USD) |
| Residency Card (2 Years) | $16,693 MXN |
| Residency Card (3 Years) | $21,142 MXN |
| Residency Card (4 Years) | $25,057 MXN |
Total Estimated Initial Cost: Approximately $703 USD (Consular fee + 1-year card).
Note: This does not include costs for document apostilles, certified translations, professional photography, or travel expenses to the consulate and INM offices.
Processing Time
- Consular Appointment Wait Time: 2 weeks to 3 months, depending on the specific consulate's backlog.
- Visa Sticker Issuance: Usually same-day or within 2–5 business days following a successful interview.
- INM Card Processing (The Canje): Once you submit your paperwork in Mexico, it typically takes 2 to 6 weeks to receive your physical card. Major hubs like Mexico City or Cancun often have longer wait times.
- Document Validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months at the time of application. The consular visa sticker is valid for 180 days; once you enter Mexico, you have exactly 30 days to start the exchange process at an INM office.
