Overview
The Hungarian Simplified Naturalization (egyszerűsített honosítás) is a fast-track citizenship pathway designed for ethnic Hungarians living abroad and the spouses of Hungarian citizens. Unlike the standard naturalization process, this pathway removes the requirement to live in Hungary for several years and exempts you from the difficult "constitutional knowledge" exam.
Established under the 2010 amendment to Act LV of 1993 on Hungarian Citizenship, this process focuses on your historical or marital connection to the Hungarian nation rather than your current place of residence. It is a "simplified" process because it bypasses the residency requirement, but it maintains a strict requirement for Hungarian language proficiency.
Important Limitations
While this pathway grants full citizenship, there are specific modern limitations to keep in mind:
- US Travel (ESTA): As of recent policy changes, the United States has restricted ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) access for Hungarian citizens born outside of Hungary's current borders. If you were born in a territory like Transylvania (Romania), Vojvodina (Serbia), or Zakarpattia (Ukraine) and obtain citizenship through this pathway, you will likely need to apply for a traditional B1/B2 visa to enter the US.
- The Oath of Allegiance: You do not become a citizen the moment your application is approved. You must attend an official ceremony and take the Oath of Allegiance. Your citizenship is only effective from the date of this oath.
Rights as a Hungarian Citizen
Once you have taken the oath and received your naturalization certificate, you hold the same legal status as any other Hungarian national.
- European Union Rights: You gain full EU citizenship, allowing you to live, work, study, and retire in any of the 27 EU member states without a visa or work permit.
- Consular Protection: You are entitled to protection by Hungarian and EU embassies and consulates worldwide.
- Passport Eligibility: You may apply for a Hungarian passport, consistently ranked as one of the strongest travel documents in the world.
- Voting Rights: You have the right to vote in Hungarian national parliamentary elections (specifically for party lists) even if you live outside of Hungary.
- Family Reunification: You can pass Hungarian citizenship to your children and sponsor non-EU family members for residency in the EU under "freedom of movement" rules.
