Simplified Naturalization (Ancestry and Marriage)

The simplified naturalization process (egyszerűsített honosítás) is a fast-track citizenship pathway for those with Hungarian ancestry or a long-term marriage to a Hungarian citizen. You must submit your application in person, as a consular officer must verify your conversational Hungarian language proficiency through a face-to-face interview at the time of filing.

Step 1: Document Preparation and Translation

Gather the "chain of descent" documents (birth, marriage, and death certificates) that link you to your Hungarian ancestor. If applying via marriage, gather your marriage certificate and your spouse's proof of citizenship.

• Translation: All documents not in Hungarian must be translated by the National Translation and Translation Authentication Bureau (OFFI). You can find their services at offi.hu.
• Legalization: Depending on the issuing country, your documents may require an Apostille or diplomatic legalization to be recognized by Hungarian authorities.

Step 2: Write Your Curriculum Vitae

You must write a handwritten Curriculum Vitae (CV) in Hungarian. This should not be a standard professional resume; instead, it should be a narrative of your life, family history, and your personal connection to Hungary. This document serves as proof of your literacy and language skills.

Step 3: Book an Appointment

You must submit your application in person. You have two options for where to file:

• Abroad: At the nearest Hungarian Embassy or Consulate.
• In Hungary: At a "Government Window" (Kormányablak) or the regional directorates of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing.

Step 4: The Submission Interview

When you hand in your Honosítási adatlap (Naturalization Sheet), the officer will conduct a short interview in Hungarian. They will ask about your background, your family, and your reasons for seeking citizenship. If the officer determines you cannot communicate effectively in Hungarian without assistance, your application will be rejected immediately.

Step 5: Security Verification and Review

Your application is sent to Hungary for a background check by the Constitution Protection Office to ensure you do not pose a national security risk. The authorities will also verify the authenticity of your ancestral documents.

Step 6: The Decision and Oath

The President of the Republic makes the final decision. If approved, you will receive an invitation to take the Citizenship Oath. You are not officially a Hungarian citizen until the moment you swear the oath or pledge. This ceremony usually takes place at the consulate or local mayor's office where you applied.

The Hungarian government does not charge an administrative fee for the naturalization procedure itself. However, you will encounter significant costs for document preparation.
