Eligibility Quiz
Do you have a clean criminal record and no pending criminal proceedings?
Requirements
To qualify for simplified naturalization, you must meet the criteria for either the Ancestry Track or the Marriage Track, in addition to general security requirements.
1. Ancestry Track
You are eligible if you can prove that at least one of your ancestors was a Hungarian citizen or is of Hungarian origin.
- Lineage: There is no limit on how many generations back you can go (parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc.). You must be able to provide a documented "chain of descent" from that ancestor to yourself.
- Historical Context: This often applies to individuals whose ancestors lived in territories that were part of Hungary before 1920 or between 1938 and 1945.
2. Marriage Track
You are eligible if you are the spouse of a Hungarian citizen and meet one of the following time-based thresholds:
- The 10-Year Rule: You have been married for at least 10 years at the time of application.
- The 5-Year Rule: You have been married for at least 5 years AND you have a child together.
- Registration: Your marriage must be legally recognized in Hungary. If you were married abroad, you must register the marriage with the Hungarian authorities (this can often be done during the citizenship application).
3. Language Proficiency
Regardless of which track you choose, you must demonstrate conversational Hungarian language proficiency. This is a non-negotiable requirement. You must be able to understand and answer questions about your life, family, and background in Hungarian during your interview with a consular officer. If you require a translator, your application will be rejected.
4. General Disqualifiers
- Criminal Record: You must have a clean criminal record under Hungarian law and no pending criminal proceedings against you.
- National Security: Your naturalization must not be deemed a threat to the public or national security of Hungary.
Conditions & Warnings
The conversational Hungarian requirement is strictly enforced; inability to communicate without a translator results in immediate rejection.
Hungarian citizens born outside current borders (e.g., Romania, Serbia, Ukraine) are currently restricted from using the US ESTA program and must apply for B1/B2 visas.
Qualifications
Conversational Hungarian proficiency verified during an in-person interview and via a handwritten CV in Hungarian.
Fees
The naturalization procedure itself is free of charge, though translation and legalization costs apply.
