Eligibility Quiz
Are you a third-country national (non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizen)?
Overview
The Type O.3 residence permit is a dedicated immigration pathway for non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals who are family members of a Greek citizen. Governed by the New Migration Code (Law 5038/2023) and updated by Law 5187/2025, this permit formalizes your right to live and work in Greece based on your family relationship.
Unlike general family reunification permits for other foreign residents, the Type O.3 is specifically for the relatives of Greek nationals. It is designed to protect the family unit of Greek citizens by providing a streamlined, five-year residency status that offers immediate access to the labor market.
Rights as a Type O.3 Residence Permit Holder
Holding a Type O.3 permit grants you significant rights within Greece and the broader European Union:
- Full Work Rights: You have immediate and unrestricted access to the Greek labor market. You may work as an employee or start your own business (self-employment) without needing additional work authorizations.
- Schengen Travel: You may travel freely to other countries within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
- Five-Year Validity: The permit is typically issued for five years, providing long-term stability.
- Path to Permanent Residency: After five years of continuous legal residence, you are eligible to apply for a Permanent Residence Card, which is valid for 10 years.
- Path to Citizenship: Spouses of Greek citizens can apply for Greek citizenship after three years of continuous residence if they have a child together. If they do not have a child, the residency requirement is seven years.
- Access to Services: You have the right to access Greek public education and healthcare services on the same terms as Greek citizens.
- Autonomous Residence: In specific circumstances, such as the death of the Greek citizen or divorce (if the marriage lasted at least three years), you may be able to retain your right to live in Greece independently.
