Eligibility Quiz
Are you a third-country national (non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizen)?
Requirements
To qualify for this permit, you must be a "third-country national" (a citizen of a country outside the EU, EEA, or Switzerland) and fall into one of the following categories of family members:
- Spouse: Legally married to the Greek citizen.
- Registered Partner: A partner in a symviosi (civil partnership agreement) that was either contracted in Greece or officially recognized by Greek authorities.
- Children: Direct descendants of the Greek citizen or their spouse/partner who are under 21 years of age.
- Dependent Children: Children over 21 if they can prove they are financially or medically dependent on the Greek citizen.
- Parents: Direct ascendants of the Greek citizen or their spouse/partner, provided they are proven to be dependent.
Key Thresholds and Conditions
- Legal Entry: You must have entered Greece legally. This can be via a standard Schengen Visa or under a visa-exemption agreement for your nationality. You must be physically present in Greece to apply.
- Cohabitation: You and the Greek citizen must reside in the same household. This is a core requirement; living at separate addresses may lead to a rejection or revocation of the permit.
- Health Insurance: You must maintain full health insurance coverage that meets Greek standards, either through the public system (EFKA) or a private policy.
- The "Two-Month" Rule: If your marriage or civil partnership took place within Greece, you are legally required to submit your application within two months of the ceremony date.
Conditions & Warnings
If the marriage occurs in Greece, the application must be filed within two months of the wedding date to avoid fines.
Proving dependency for parents is strictly scrutinized; authorities often require proof of zero income in the home country.
Significant backlogs in Athens and Thessaloniki can extend processing times up to 12 months.
Qualifications
No language requirement for the initial residence permit, though B1 is typically required for later citizenship applications.
Fees
Exempt from standard government fees (paravolo); only the €16 biometric card printing fee applies.
