Eligibility Quiz
Was the child under 16 years of age when the adoption was finalized?
Documents Required
While citizenship is a legal right following the adoption, you must gather specific paperwork to notify the government and obtain official identification like a Ghana Card or passport.
Identity and Legal Documents
- Legal Adoption Order: The original decree issued by a competent court in Ghana (or a foreign court order formally recognized by Ghanaian authorities).
- Child’s Original Birth Certificate: From their country of origin. If the document is not in English, it must be accompanied by a certified translation and, where applicable, an apostille or legal authentication.
- Proof of Adoptive Parent’s Citizenship: A valid Ghanaian Passport, Ghana Card, or a Citizenship Certificate.
Administrative and Supporting Docs
- Ministry of Interior Notification (Form 1): This is the formal notice to the Minister of the Interior regarding the acquisition of citizenship. It is a critical step to ensure the child is entered into the national citizenship register.
- Home Study Report: A document required during the adoption phase by the Department of Social Development to verify the suitability of the placement.
