Eligibility Quiz
Was the child under 16 years of age when the adoption was finalized?
Requirements
To qualify for citizenship through this pathway, the following criteria must be met at the time the adoption is finalized:
- Age Limit: The child must be under 16 years of age. If the child reaches their 16th birthday before the adoption order is legally finalized, they cannot use this pathway and may instead need to pursue citizenship through naturalization.
- Adoptive Parent Nationality: At least one of the adopting parents must be a citizen of Ghana.
- Child's Original Nationality: This pathway is for children where neither biological parent is a citizen of Ghana. If a biological parent is Ghanaian, the child likely already holds citizenship by descent.
- Legal Validity: The adoption must be legally recognized under Ghanaian law. For adoptions involving children from outside Ghana, the process must comply with the Hague Adoption Convention, which Ghana joined in 2016 to ensure international legal standards are met.
