Eligibility Quiz
Are you the biological or legal parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident?
Overview
The Canada Super Visa is a specialized multi-entry visa designed exclusively for the parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. While a standard visitor visa typically limits stays to six months, the Super Visa allows eligible family members to remain in Canada for up to five years per entry.
This pathway is often used by families who want to spend extended periods together without the frequent need to renew status or exit the country. It is distinct from the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP); while the PGP grants permanent residency through a lottery-based sponsorship, the Super Visa is a temporary resident visa that provides long-term visiting privileges without granting permanent status.
Key Policy Changes
In July 2022, the Canadian government implemented significant reforms to make the Super Visa more flexible. The length of stay per entry was increased from two years to five years. Additionally, holders now have the right to apply for a two-year extension while still inside Canada, potentially allowing for a continuous stay of up to seven years. Another major change allowed for the use of international medical insurance providers, provided they are authorized by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI).
Rights as a Super Visa Holder
Holding a Super Visa grants you specific privileges, but it is important to understand the limitations of this status.
- Extended Stay: You have the right to remain in Canada for up to five years at a time without needing to exit and re-enter.
- Multiple Entry: The visa is typically valid for 10 years, allowing you to travel in and out of Canada as often as you wish during that period.
- No Work Rights: You are not authorized to work in Canada. Engaging in unauthorized employment can lead to the cancellation of your visa.
- No Study Rights: You generally cannot enroll in degree-seeking programs, though short-term courses (under six months) may be permitted.
- No Social Benefits: You do not have access to Canadian provincial healthcare or social assistance. This is why maintaining private medical insurance is a mandatory condition of your stay.
- Path to Permanent Residency: The Super Visa does not automatically lead to permanent residency or citizenship. However, you may remain in Canada on this visa while a separate application for permanent residency (such as through the PGP) is being processed.
