Documents Required
The 2025/2026 reforms have expanded the types of evidence you can use to prove your ancestry. All foreign documents must be consularly legalized (the Vietnamese equivalent of an Apostille) and translated into Vietnamese by a certified notary.
Identity and Status Documents
- Valid Foreign Passport: Your current proof of identity and nationality.
- Foreign Residence Card: If you are currently living within Vietnam.
- Criminal Record: A judicial record card (Police Clearance) from your country of residence and/or Vietnam.
Proof of Descent
- Birth Certificates: Your own birth certificate and those of your parents.
- Family Registers (Ho Khau): Also known as "Family Books," these are critical historical records of household registration in Vietnam.
- Historical ID Cards: Any old identity cards from the Republic of Vietnam (pre-1975) or the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
- Alternative Evidence: Under the 2025 law, if primary documents are missing, you may submit school records, baptismal certificates, or letters from recognized overseas Vietnamese associations.
- DNA Results: In specific cases where paper records are non-existent, DNA test results may now be accepted to prove a biological link to a Vietnamese citizen.
