Eligibility Quiz
Is the sponsor (the person already in Spain) a citizen of a non-EU/EEA/Swiss country?
Requirements
Eligibility for this visa is split into two categories: the Sponsor (the person already in Spain) and the Applicant (the family member abroad).
The Sponsor (Reagrupante)
- Residency Period: You must have lived legally in Spain for at least one year and have already applied for or obtained a renewal for a second year of residency.
- Long-Term Exception: If you hold a Long-Term Residence (Larga Duración) or Long-Term EU Residence permit, you do not have to wait the initial year; you can apply for your family to join you immediately.
- Nationality: You must be a citizen of a non-EU/EEA/Swiss country.
The Applicant (Reagrupado)
Only specific family members qualify for this pathway:
- Spouse or Legal Partner: This includes your legal spouse (provided you are not separated) or a registered common-law partner (pareja de hecho). Unregistered partners may qualify if you can prove the relationship existed before you moved to Spain.
- Children: Your children or your spouse’s children (including adopted children) who are under 18 years old. Children over 18 only qualify if they have a disability that makes them objectively unable to provide for their own needs.
- Parents (Ascendants): You can only bring your parents (or your spouse's parents) if you hold a Long-Term Residence permit. They must be over 65 years old, and you must prove they are financially dependent on you (typically by showing you have sent them money for at least the last year).
Financial Thresholds (2026)
You must prove you earn enough to support your family without relying on Spanish social assistance. This is calculated based on the IPREM (Indicador Público de Renta de Efectos Múltiples), which for 2026 is €600 per month.
- For a family of two (You + 1 relative): You must earn 150% of the IPREM (€900/month).
- For each additional member: You must earn an additional 50% of the IPREM (+€300/month).
Conditions & Warnings
Do not apply before completing one full year of legal residence in Spain; applications at month 11 are frequently rejected.
Sponsors must hold a Long-Term Residence permit to reunite parents, who must generally be over 65 years old.
The Housing Report (Informe de Vivienda Adecuada) is a common bottleneck; a Notarial Act can substitute if the Town Hall delays beyond 30 days.
