Eligibility Quiz
Are you a citizen of a country outside the European Union, EEA, or Switzerland?
Requirements
To qualify for this residence permit, you must first be officially recognized as a Slovak Living Abroad by the Office for Slovaks Living Abroad (USZZ). Eligibility is divided into two main categories:
1. Slovak Ethnic Origin
You must demonstrate that you have at least one direct ancestor (parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent) of Slovak nationality.
- Critical Distinction: You must prove your ancestor was ethnically Slovak. Documents from the early 20th century that list "Czechoslovak" nationality may require additional supporting evidence to confirm Slovak ethnicity specifically.
2. Slovak National Identity (Awareness)
If you cannot prove direct ancestry, you may qualify by demonstrating "Slovak national awareness." This involves showing active involvement in Slovak community life, culture, or language preservation abroad. This is typically verified through written testimony from a recognized Slovak organization in your home country or through the testimony of two witnesses who already hold SLA status.
General Criteria
- Nationality: This pathway is specifically for third-country nationals (those from outside the EU, EEA, or Switzerland).
- Clean Record: You must not have a criminal record and must not be deemed a threat to the public health or national security of the Slovak Republic.
Conditions & Warnings
Applicants must prove Slovak ethnic origin (nationality), not just Czechoslovak citizenship; documents listing 'Czechoslovak' may require additional evidence of Slovak ethnicity.
Booking appointments with the Foreign Police in major cities like Bratislava is extremely difficult and should be done weeks in advance.
Once the permit is granted, you must enter Slovak territory within 180 days.

Exempt from Slovak language and history exams for citizenship after 3 years of residency.
Fees
Includes SLA Certificate fee (approx. €14) and residence card issuance fee (approx. €10). The residence permit application itself is exempt for SLA holders.
