Eligibility Quiz
Was at least one of your parents born on the island of Ireland?
Requirements
Your eligibility depends entirely on where your ancestors were born and their legal status at the time of your birth.
1. Parent Born in Ireland
If at least one of your parents was born on the island of Ireland (including Northern Ireland) and was an Irish citizen at the time of your birth, you are automatically an Irish citizen. You do not need to apply for a citizenship certificate; you already hold the status and can apply for an Irish passport immediately.
2. Grandparent Born in Ireland
If your parents were born outside of Ireland, but at least one of your grandparents was born on the island of Ireland, you are eligible for citizenship. However, unlike the "parent" rule, this status is not automatic. You must apply for and be entered into the Foreign Births Register. You only legally become an Irish citizen on the date you are registered, not the date you were born.
3. The Great-Grandparent "Chain"
You generally cannot claim citizenship based solely on a great-grandparent. You only qualify through this generation if your parent (the grandchild of the Irish-born person) registered themselves in the Foreign Births Register before you were born. This creates a continuous chain of citizenship. If your parent registered after your birth, or never registered at all, you are ineligible for this pathway.
4. Irish Associations (Discretionary)
If your Irish ancestry is more distant than a grandparent, you cannot use the FBR process. While the Minister for Justice has the power to waive residency requirements for those of "Irish associations," recent 2025 guidance clarifies that this is highly discretionary. It typically requires you to live in Ireland for at least three years and demonstrate significant contemporary links to the state.
