Residence Permit for Family Reunification

To qualify for this permit, you must meet specific relationship criteria and your sponsor must hold an eligible status.

Eligible Family Members

You may apply if you fall into one of the following categories:

• Spouse: The legal spouse of the sponsor. This includes registered partners under Hungarian law.
• Minor Children: Children (including adopted or foster children) of the sponsor or their spouse, provided the parent has legal custody.
• Dependent Parents: Parents of the sponsor or their spouse who are dependent on them for support.
• Parents of Minors: A person exercising parental custody over a minor Hungarian child, provided they live in the same household.
• Other Dependents: Siblings or direct ancestors of the sponsor/spouse who cannot support themselves due to documented health reasons.

Sponsor Eligibility

The person you are joining in Hungary (the sponsor) must hold a valid residence status. However, not all permit holders can act as sponsors.

You CAN apply if your sponsor holds:

• Hungarian Citizenship.
• A Permanent Residence Permit (Settlement Permit).
• An EU Blue Card or a Hungarian Card.
• A Research or Guest Investor residence permit.
• A Guest Self-Employment permit (only after the sponsor has held it for at least one year).

You CANNOT apply if your sponsor holds:

• A Guest Worker permit.
• A Seasonal Employment permit.
• A Student permit (including job-seeking permits for graduates).
• A White Card (Digital Nomad visa).
• A Traineeship or Voluntary Service permit.

General Criteria

• Polygamy Restriction: If the sponsor already has a spouse living in Hungary with a residence permit, no other spouse can be granted a permit.
• Financial Stability: You must prove that the sponsor has sufficient income or savings to support the entire family without relying on Hungarian social assistance.
• Housing: You must have a confirmed place to live that meets the minimum habitation standards for the number of people residing there.
