Eligibility Quiz
Do you have a clean criminal record and pose no threat to Hungary's national security?
Requirements
Your eligibility depends entirely on which of the two legal tracks you fit into.
1. Verification of Citizenship (Állampolgárság igazolása)
This track is for those who are already technically citizens by birth but have never been registered.
- The Rule: If at least one parent was a Hungarian citizen at the time of your birth, you are a citizen.
- The "10-Year Rule" Limitation: This is the most common disqualifier. If your ancestor left Hungary before September 1, 1929, and stayed abroad for more than 10 years without renewing their passport or registering with a consulate, they may have automatically lost their citizenship. If the link was broken before the next generation was born, you cannot use this route.
- Language: There is no language requirement for this track.
2. Simplified Naturalization (Egyszerűsített honosítás)
This track is for descendants of those who lost their citizenship or whose ancestors were from the "Greater Hungary" territories (now parts of Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Ukraine, Croatia, and Austria).
- Ancestry: You must prove you are a descendant of a former Hungarian citizen or an individual who originated from Hungary. There is no limit on how many generations you can go back.
- Language Proficiency: You must be able to communicate in Hungarian at a conversational level (roughly B1 level). You must be able to describe your life, your family, and your reasons for applying without a translator.
- Clean Record: You must have a clean criminal record and must not be considered a threat to Hungarian national security.
Conditions & Warnings
Authorities have significantly tightened language requirements as of 2023-2025; applicants must be able to hold a fluid conversation in Hungarian.
Hungarian citizens born outside current borders (Simplified Naturalization) may face US ESTA restrictions and require traditional B1/B2 visas.
If an ancestor left Hungary before 1929 and stayed abroad for 10+ years, citizenship may have been lost, requiring the language-based naturalization route.
Qualifications
Mandatory conversational Hungarian proficiency (roughly B1 level) for Simplified Naturalization; no formal written exam but verified via interview.
Fees
Simplified Naturalization is technically free; Verification of Citizenship may have a small administrative fee (approx. €40–€100).
