Eligibility Quiz
Is the sponsor (the person already in Greece) a third-country national (non-EU/EEA/Swiss)?
Requirements
To act as a Sponsor, you must have resided legally in Greece for at least two years and hold a residence permit with a remaining validity of at least one year. You cannot initiate this process immediately upon arriving in Greece.
Eligible Family Members
Only the "nuclear family" is eligible under the O.1 category:
- Spouse: Must be at least 18 years of age. Greece does not recognize polygamous marriages; if you already have a spouse living with you in Greece, you cannot bring a second spouse.
- Minor Children: Unmarried children under the age of 18, including those who are legally adopted.
- Dependent Children: Children of the sponsor or spouse (including adopted) under 18, provided the sponsor has legal custody.
Note on Parents: Unlike permits for family of Greek citizens, the O.1 permit generally does not include parents (ascendants) or adult children unless you hold a specific high-value permit like the Golden Visa or a High-Skilled "EU Blue Card."
Financial Thresholds
You must prove "stable and regular" annual income. This income cannot come from social assistance. The baseline requirement is the annual salary of an unskilled worker, which must be increased by:
- 20% for your spouse.
- 15% for each child.
Housing and Health
- Adequate Accommodation: You must provide evidence of a home (owned or rented) that meets the health and safety standards deemed sufficient for a family of your size.
- Health Insurance: You must prove that you have full health insurance coverage that extends to all family members being brought to Greece.
Conditions & Warnings
The sponsor must have resided legally in Greece for at least two years before initiating the reunification request.
Significant backlogs in Athens (Attica) can extend the final permit issuance to 12 months after entry.
This permit does not typically extend to parents (ascendants) of the sponsor, only spouses and minor children.
Qualifications
No language requirement for the initial Type O.1 residence permit.
Fees
Includes average €75 consular fee, €150 residence permit fee, and €16 card printing fee.
