Eligibility Quiz
Are you a person of African descent in the Diaspora OR a former Ghanaian citizen who lost citizenship due to foreign naturalization?
Requirements
To qualify for the Right of Abode, you must fall into one of two specific categories and meet residency or ancestry thresholds.
Persons of African Descent in the Diaspora
This category is for the "Historic Diaspora"—individuals whose immediate forebears resided outside the African continent (e.g., African Americans or Afro-Caribbeans).
- Residency Threshold: You must typically hold a valid residence permit and have lived in Ghana for a minimum of two to five years before you are eligible to apply.
- Economic Contribution: You must demonstrate that you have contributed to Ghana’s development through investment, business, or professional service.
- Character: You must be of good character and have no criminal record in Ghana or your home country.
Former Ghanaian Citizens
This category applies to individuals who were once Ghanaian citizens by birth or descent but were forced to renounce their Ghanaian citizenship because they acquired the nationality of a country that does not allow dual citizenship.
Ineligibility
You generally cannot apply for this status if you have a criminal record, are considered a security risk by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), or cannot prove your African ancestry through documentation.
Conditions & Warnings
Commercial DNA tests (e.g., AncestryDNA) are not officially accepted as standalone legal proof of descent.
The process requires final approval from the President of Ghana, which often leads to significant backlogs and delays beyond the official 6-month timeline.
Right of Abode does not grant the right to vote or a Ghanaian passport.
Qualifications
No language requirement is specified for this pathway.
Fees
Includes permit fee (~3,879 GHS), medical exam (~$280 USD), and G-Card (~$120 USD). Total is an estimate based on 2026 currency conversion.
