Eligibility Quiz
Are you currently married to a Ghanaian citizen, or were you married to one until their death or a divorce?
Requirements
Eligibility is strictly defined by your residency history and your relationship to Ghana. You generally fall into one of two categories:
General Applicants
To qualify based on residency and contribution, you must meet the following thresholds:
- Residency Duration: You must have resided in Ghana for a total of 6 years within the 8-year period immediately preceding your application.
- Continuous Presence: You must have lived in Ghana continuously for the 12 months directly before you apply.
- Substantial Contribution: You must demonstrate that you have contributed significantly to Ghana’s development. This is typically shown through major financial investments, business ownership, or the possession of highly specialized skills that benefit the national economy.
- Character and Intent: You must have a clean criminal record (no prison sentences of 12 months or more) and state a clear intent to reside in Ghana permanently.
Foreign Spouses
If you are married to a Ghanaian citizen, the requirements are significantly relaxed:
- Reduced Residency: You only need to have resided in Ghana for an aggregate of 3 years.
- Marriage Validity: The marriage must be "subsisting" and entered into in good faith. Notably, if the marriage ends due to death or divorce after the 3-year residency requirement has been met, you may still be eligible if the union was genuine.
- Exemption: Spouses are generally exempt from having to prove "substantial contribution" to the country.
