Eligibility Quiz
Are you 18 years or older?
Requirements
Eligibility for registration is strictly defined by your relationship to a Ghanaian citizen or your ancestral ties to the African continent.
1. Spouses of Ghanaian Citizens
Under Section 10 of the Citizenship Act, you qualify if you are or have been married to a Ghanaian citizen.
- Residency: While there is no fixed statutory years-of-residence requirement, the Ministry of the Interior typically requires proof of an aggregate of one year of residence in Ghana or evidence of regular visits to demonstrate a genuine marital connection.
- Marital Status: You remain eligible even if your spouse has died or the marriage has been dissolved, provided you have not subsequently married a non-Ghanaian.
- Exclusions: "Sham" marriages or those entered into solely for the purpose of obtaining immigration status are disqualified.
2. Historic African Diaspora
This pathway is for individuals of African descent (primarily from the Americas and the Caribbean) seeking to "return" to Ghana.
- Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
- Legal Status: You must currently hold a valid two-year residence permit in Ghana. This is a hard threshold; if you have not lived in Ghana for at least two years, you must first apply for a Right of Abode or Permanent Residency.
- Ties to Ghana: You must demonstrate "strong ties" to the country, such as owning property, running a registered business, or active involvement in a local community.
3. Children
Under Section 11, a parent or legal guardian may apply to register a child under the age of 18 if at least one of the child's parents is a citizen of Ghana.
Conditions & Warnings
A strict two-year residency permit is required for the Diaspora pathway; those who do not meet this should apply for Right of Abode first.
Beware of third-party agents; fees should only be paid through the official portal or Ministry offices.
Vetting is by appointment only; unscheduled applicants will be turned away due to high volume.
Qualifications
Applicants must attend a one-day Citizenship Orientation Class covering Ghanaian history and the national anthem.
Fees
Fee for Historic Diaspora; spousal registration fees are historically lower (approx. 500-2,000 GHS). Fees are non-refundable and paid after approval.
