Eligibility Quiz
Were you born in Ghana?
Requirements
To qualify for citizenship by descent, you must prove a biological link to a parent or grandparent who is or was a citizen of Ghana. The specific criteria depend on when you were born:
- Born on or after January 7, 1993: You are a citizen if at least one of your parents or grandparents is or was a citizen of Ghana.
- Born between March 6, 1957, and January 6, 1993: You are a citizen if either of your parents or any of your grandparents was a citizen of Ghana at the time of your birth.
- Born before March 6, 1957: You are a citizen if you were born in Ghana and at least one of your parents or grandparents was born in Ghana.
Key Thresholds:
- Ancestry: You must be able to trace your lineage to at least one Ghanaian parent or grandparent. Great-grandparentage is generally not sufficient unless it can be proven that the link established citizenship for the intervening generation.
- Dual Citizenship: Ghana allows Dual Citizenship. If you are a citizen of another country (such as the US, UK, or Canada), you do not have to renounce your current nationality to claim your Ghanaian citizenship. However, you must officially register your dual status to receive a Dual Citizenship Card.
