Eligibility Quiz
Can you prove you have at least €1,091 per month (approx. €13,092 per year) for your stay?
Overview
The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is a residence permit designed for non-EU nationals who wish to enter Germany to seek employment. Unlike traditional work visas, this pathway does not require you to have a firm job offer before you arrive. It is a points-based system introduced in June 2024 as part of Germany's Skilled Immigration Act reforms to make the labor market more accessible to international talent.
While it is often compared to a "Job Seeker Visa," the Opportunity Card is significantly more flexible. It allows you to work part-time in any field while you search for a permanent role, and it provides a clear, structured points system for those whose foreign qualifications are not yet fully recognized by German authorities.
Important Limitations
The Opportunity Card is a temporary bridge, not a permanent status. It is issued for a maximum of one year. While it can sometimes be extended for up to two additional years under very specific "follow-on" search conditions, its primary purpose is to facilitate a transition into a long-term work permit.
If you do not secure a "qualified" job (a role that matches your professional qualifications) within the 12-month period, you are generally required to leave Germany. It cannot be used for permanent residency (Niederlassungserlaubnis) directly; you must first switch to a standard work residence permit or an EU Blue Card.
Rights as an Opportunity Card Holder
- Job Search Rights: You have the right to live in Germany for up to 12 months specifically to look for a position that matches your professional background.
- Part-Time Work: Unlike many other search visas, you are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week in any job (including unskilled labor) to support yourself while you look for a career role.
- Trial Employment: You may engage in "trial work" for potential employers for up to two weeks at a time. This allows you and the employer to test the fit before committing to a full contract.
- Status Conversion: Once you find a qualified job offer, you have the right to apply to convert your Opportunity Card into a long-term residence permit (such as a Skilled Worker Visa or EU Blue Card) from within Germany.
- Family Reunification: Your spouse and children may apply to join you, provided the financial requirements for the entire family are met. If your spouse also qualifies for an Opportunity Card, it can help your own points total.
- Travel Rights: As a holder of a German national visa/residence permit, you generally have the right to travel within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism.
