Eligibility Quiz
Are you a citizen of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland?
Overview
The Austria Job Seeker Visa (Visum zur Arbeitssuche) is a specialized Category D visa that allows "Very Highly Qualified Workers" from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland to enter Austria for up to six months to find employment. Unlike most work visas, you do not need a job offer or a contract in hand to apply for this pathway.
It is important to distinguish this from the standard Red-White-Red Card. While the Job Seeker Visa allows you to live in Austria while looking for a job, it does not grant you the right to start working immediately. Instead, it serves as a bridge; once you secure a job offer that matches your high qualifications, you can convert this visa into a formal residence and work permit while still inside Austria.
Important Limitations
The Job Seeker Visa is a high-threshold pathway with specific constraints:
- The "Senior Management" Standard: If you claim points for a high salary in a management role, the Austrian Public Employment Service (AMS) will verify if you had "decisive influence" on the company's management. A high salary alone is often insufficient without proof of executive authority.
- No Quotas: Unlike some other Austrian residence permits, this visa is not subject to annual quotas. You may apply at any time of the year.
- No Immediate Work: You are legally prohibited from beginning any form of employment—including trial periods—until you have successfully transitioned to a Red-White-Red Card.
Rights as a Job Seeker Visa Holder
- Right to Search: You have the legal right to remain in Austria for up to six months specifically to interview and network with potential employers.
- In-Country Transition: If you secure a job offer that meets the "Very Highly Qualified" salary and skill requirements, you have the right to apply for a Red-White-Red Card at the local residence authority in Austria without having to leave the country.
- No Family Reunification: This visa does not grant family reunification rights. Your family members cannot join you during the job-seeking phase; they may only apply for residency once you have secured a job and obtained your Red-White-Red Card.
- No Access to Social Benefits: You are expected to be self-sufficient and do not have access to the Austrian social welfare system during your job search.
