Eligibility Quiz
Are you 18 years or older?
Requirements
To qualify for this pathway, you must satisfy a specific "6/5" rule regarding your time in Austria and the duration of your marriage, alongside general integration criteria.
1. Marriage and Residency Thresholds
- 6 Years of Residency: You must have lived in Austria legally and continuously for at least 6 years. "Continuous" means you should not have spent more than 20% of this time (roughly 14 months total) outside the country.
- 5 Years of Marriage: You must have been married to (or in a registered partnership with) an Austrian citizen for at least 5 years.
- Shared Household (Gemeinsamer Haushalt): You and your spouse must live together in a shared residence. Authorities may conduct "house visits" or interview neighbors to verify that the marriage is not a Scheinehe (marriage of convenience).
- Intact Marriage: The marriage must be "upright" and valid at the time of application and at the moment the citizenship is officially granted.
2. General Naturalization Criteria
- Renunciation of Current Nationality: Austria generally forbids dual citizenship. You must be prepared to renounce your current citizenship once you receive an assurance of Austrian citizenship, unless doing so is legally impossible or involves unreasonable burdens.
- Financial Stability: You must prove you have a stable income and have not claimed specific social welfare benefits for at least 36 months within the last 6 years. The final 6 months immediately preceding your application must be free of social assistance.
- Language Proficiency: You must demonstrate German language skills at a minimum of Level B1 (CEFR).
- Civic Knowledge: You must pass the "Living in Austria" test, which covers Austrian history, democratic values, and the culture of your specific federal state.
- Integrity and Security: You must have a clean criminal record with no pending proceedings or serious administrative offenses. You must not pose a threat to public peace, order, or international relations.
