Eligibility Quiz
Was at least one of your parents a British citizen at the time of your birth?
Application Process
British citizenship by descent is generally passed from a parent to a child born outside the UK. Before applying, you must determine if you are a citizen automatically or if you need to register. If you are already a citizen automatically, you do not need to apply for citizenship; you simply apply for a British passport. If you are not a citizen automatically due to historical legislative unfairness (such as rules that previously favored fathers over mothers), you must apply to register.
Step 1: Determine Your Status
Use the official GOV.UK tool to see if you already hold citizenship.
- Automatic Claims: You are likely already a citizen if you were born after July 2006 to a British parent who was born in the UK, or if you were born before 1983 to a British father married to your mother. In these cases, skip to a passport application.
- Registration Claims: If you were born before 1983 to a British mother (Form UKM) or before July 2006 to an unmarried British father (Form UKF), you must apply to register.
Step 2: Gather Your Documents
You must provide original documents or certified copies (official copies verified by a professional). If your documents are not in English or Welsh, you must provide a certified translation (a professional translation with a signed declaration from the translator).
- Your Identity: Your full birth certificate (showing parents' names) and your current travel passport.
- Parental Proof: Your parent’s UK birth certificate, British passport held at the time of your birth, or their Naturalization (citizenship granted after living in the UK) or Registration certificate.
- Marriage Evidence: Your parents' marriage certificate (essential for most births before 2006).
- Special Circumstances: For Section 4L claims (historical unfairness), include evidence of why you were prevented from acquiring citizenship previously, such as proof of a grandparent's Crown Service.
Step 3: Submit the Online Application
Most applications are submitted through the Home Office (UKVI) online portal.
- Select the correct form (e.g., UKM, UKF, or the general registration form for Section 4L).
- Pay the application fee online at the time of submission.
- Download the document checklist provided at the end of the application.
Step 4: Provide Biometrics
After submitting your application, you will be prompted to book an appointment to provide your biometrics (fingerprints and a digital photo).
- In the UK: Book an appointment at a UKVCAS (UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services) center.
- Outside the UK: Book an appointment at a local Visa Application Centre (VAC).
Step 5: The Good Character Requirement
If you are 10 years old or older and applying via a registration route, you must meet the Good Character requirement. This involves a check of your criminal record and immigration history. Note that 2025 updates have tightened these rules regarding previous immigration breaches.
Step 6: Attend a Citizenship Ceremony
If your application is approved and you are an adult, you will receive an invitation to a Citizenship Ceremony. You must attend this ceremony to take an oath of allegiance and receive your Certificate of Registration. You are not legally a British citizen until this ceremony is completed.
Step 7: Apply for Your Passport
Once you have your registration certificate, you can apply for your first British adult passport. Do not attempt to apply for a passport before receiving your certificate.

Processing Time
- Citizenship Registration: The standard processing time is 6 months.
- Complex Cases: Applications involving "double descent" or Section 4L (historical unfairness) often require manual research and can take 8 to 12 months.
- First Adult Passport: Once citizenship is granted, an overseas passport application typically takes 10 to 16 weeks.
- Document Validity: Ensure your current passport is valid for at least 6 months when you begin the application to avoid delays during the biometric stage.
