Eligibility Quiz
Was at least one of your parents or grandparents born in Portugal and did they retain their Portuguese nationality?
Requirements
Eligibility depends on how many generations removed you are from the last ancestor born in Portugal.
Children of Portuguese Citizens (1st Generation)
If you were born abroad to a Portuguese mother or father, you are entitled to citizenship by attribution.
- Key Threshold: Your parent must have been a Portuguese citizen at the time of your birth.
- Requirement: Your birth must be registered with the Portuguese Civil Registry. There are no language or "connection" requirements for children.
Grandchildren of Portuguese Citizens (2nd Generation)
If you are the grandchild of a Portuguese citizen, you may apply for citizenship provided you meet the following criteria:
- The "Link" Requirement: You must declare that you want to be Portuguese and demonstrate an effective connection to the national community.
- Language Proficiency: Since 2020, a "sufficient knowledge" of the Portuguese language is the primary way to prove this connection. This is typically satisfied by a Level A2 (Elementary) certificate or higher.
- Clean Criminal Record: You must not have been convicted of a crime punishable under Portuguese law by a prison sentence of three years or more.
Great-Grandchildren (3rd Generation)
There is no direct "Great-Grandchild" clause in Portuguese law. To qualify, the generation above you (your parent) must first obtain their citizenship as a grandchild. Once your parent becomes a Portuguese citizen, you then apply as the child of a Portuguese citizen.
- Critical Limitation: If the middle generations (parent or grandparent) are deceased without having claimed citizenship, the line is "broken," and the great-grandchild generally cannot apply through this pathway.
Conditions & Warnings
Applicants must prove an 'effective connection' to the Portuguese community, though for grandchildren, the language requirement (A2) is currently the primary legal proxy for this connection.
Great-grandchildren do not qualify directly; a parent (the grandchild) must first obtain citizenship for the next generation to become eligible.
