Requirements
To qualify for this pathway, you must demonstrate your ethnic connection to Lithuania and meet general security standards.
- Definition of Descent: You must prove that at least one of your parents or grandparents is or was Lithuanian.
- Self-Identification: You must formally declare in writing that you consider yourself Lithuanian.
- Ethnicity vs. Nationality: This pathway is based on tautybė (ethnicity) rather than pilietybė (citizenship). You qualify if your ancestors were ethnically Lithuanian, even if they never held a Lithuanian passport.
- Exemption from Exams: Applicants under this category are exempt from the Lithuanian language and Constitution examinations normally required for permanent residents.
- Clean Record: You must not have a serious criminal history or be deemed a threat to the security or public order of the Republic of Lithuania.
- Financial Means: You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to support yourself, typically equal to the minimum monthly salary for one year.
Conditions & Warnings
The permit focuses on ethnic origin (ancestry) rather than the legal citizenship status of ancestors between 1918-1940.
Applicants must provide a continuous chain of birth certificates linking them to the Lithuanian ancestor; missing links are the most common cause for rejection.
While the status is permanent, the physical card must be renewed every 5 years and authorities may verify actual residence in Lithuania.
