Eligibility Quiz
At the time of the adoption, was at least one of the adopters an Irish citizen?
Documents Required
Because citizenship is automatic, you do not apply for a "citizenship certificate." Instead, you gather documents to prove the adoption's validity, usually for the purpose of obtaining the child's first Irish passport.
Identity and Citizenship Documents
- Proof of Parent’s Citizenship: The Irish parent’s birth certificate (if born in Ireland), Irish passport, or Naturalization Certificate.
- The Adoption Certificate:
- For domestic adoptions: The Irish Adoption Certificate issued by the AAI.
- For foreign adoptions: The Certificate of Entry in the Register of Intercountry Adoptions (RICA).
- Foreign Decree: The original adoption decree or certificate from the country where the adoption took place (for intercountry adoptions).
Supporting Paperwork
- Translations: Any document not originally in English or Irish must be accompanied by a certified translation.
- Marriage/Civil Partnership Certificates: If the adoption was carried out by a couple, the relevant certificates must be provided.
- Passport Photos: Standard biometric photos of the child, witnessed and signed according to Irish passport regulations.
