Eligibility Quiz
Do you have a criminal record or are you considered a threat to Hungarian national security?
Requirements
To qualify for this pathway, you must meet specific residency, financial, and integration thresholds.
Residency Duration
- Standard Track: You must have resided legally and continuously in Hungary for at least 5 years immediately preceding your application.
- EU Blue Card Track: You may qualify if you have lived in the EU for 5 years continuously (holding a Blue Card, research, or study permit), provided the last 2 years were spent specifically in Hungary as an EU Blue Card holder.
- Calculating the 5 Years: Not all time counts equally. Time spent on a Student Residence Permit only counts for 50% (e.g., 4 years of study equals 2 years of qualifying time). Time spent on seasonal work, voluntary service, or under diplomatic immunity does not count at all.
- Continuity Rule: Your stay is considered "continuous" only if you have not been absent from Hungary for more than 6 consecutive months and your total absences do not exceed 10 months over the entire 5-year period.
Integration and Conduct
- Hungarian Cultural Knowledge Exam: As of January 1, 2025, you must pass a mandatory exam covering Hungarian history, geography, and culture. The exam is conducted exclusively in the Hungarian language.
- Clean Record: You must not have a criminal record and must not be considered a threat to public or national security. You cannot have an active SIS (Schengen Information System) alert or entry ban against you.
Financial and Health Stability
- Subsistence: You must demonstrate sufficient, stable financial resources to support yourself and your family without relying on the Hungarian social assistance system.
- Accommodation: You must have a registered residential address in Hungary (proven by a lease or deed).
- Health Coverage: You must have comprehensive health insurance, such as the Hungarian social security card (TAJ kártya) or a private policy.
Ineligible Permit Types
You cannot apply for this status if your current residence permit is for:
- Digital Nomad status (White Card)
- Seasonal employment
- Vocational training
- Medical treatment
