Eligibility Quiz
Was at least one of your parents a Canadian citizen at the time of your birth?
Documents Required
To prove your claim to citizenship, you must submit a "Proof of Citizenship" application. You will need to gather the following paperwork:
Identity and Parentage
- Long-Form Birth Certificate: An official birth certificate issued by a government authority that lists the names of your parents.
- Personal Identification: Two pieces of valid ID, such as a foreign passport, driver’s license, or national ID card.
- Citizenship Photos: Two identical citizenship-eligible photographs taken within the last six months.
Proof of Canadian Connection
- Parent’s Proof of Status: Your parent’s Canadian birth certificate, Canadian citizenship certificate, or naturalization records.
- Evidence of Physical Presence: If your parent was born abroad, you must provide "hard" evidence of their 1,095 days in Canada. This includes:
- Employment records or T4 slips.
- Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Notice of Assessments.
- School transcripts or university records.
- Provincial health records or entry/exit records from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
Translations and Legalities
- Official Translations: Any document not in English or French must be accompanied by a certified translation and an affidavit from the translator.
- Apostilles/Legalization: Depending on your country of birth, certain certificates may require an Apostille (a specialized certificate of authentication) to be recognized by Canadian authorities.
